HONOLUL (AP) — A drugmaker is expanding its range of Viagra to include a man's sexual side effects.
In a new filing, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) said the company is expanding its Viagra and Cialis treatment options to include the man's sexual side effects.
“We are pleased to see this expanding,” said Paul R. Stetker, an NABP president. “This is the first time that men are being treated for erectile dysfunction with a new treatment.”
According to a new NABP statement, the company will be reviewing the new drug, which will include two new treatments: sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis).
Viagra and Cialis were approved by the FDA in 1998 and 2003, respectively, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
In addition, the company will review the new treatment, which includes sildenafil and tadalafil, and will also evaluate any potential drug interactions that could impact the medication. The new treatments are in Phase III trials.
Sildenafil, Pfizer’s patent for Viagra, is still expected to expire on Sept. 30, 2013, but the drugmaker is working on other ways to improve its portfolio of drugs and to expand its distribution channels for the product.
NABP is a national association of Boards of Pharmacy. It has three members and is the world’s largest pharmacy association.

The NABP statement also says that “the FDA has evaluated the safety and efficacy of sildenafil and tadalafil and is taking appropriate steps to ensure that these drugs are appropriate for men with erectile dysfunction, and that this is an appropriate treatment option.”Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, said in a statement that it has “engaged in extensive research and development” to “examine and determine the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of all new products launched since the launch of Viagra in 1998.”

In an email to Reuters, Read said Pfizer is working to identify and discontinue the brand name Viagra in the event of the company’s current inability to maintain the patent on the drug.
The NABP statement says that Pfizer “expects to review the FDA’s decision in the future and will consult with regulatory authorities to ensure appropriate use of the brand-name product.”
Viagra’s patent expired in the US in 2003, allowing the drugmaker to expand its drug portfolio. The company plans to begin marketing sildenafil and tadalafil in the second half of 2004.
